In the Market for a New House? Here's Five Things to Look for When Home-Shopping

Shopping for a new home should be a fun and exciting experience. When you know what to look for, it takes a lot of the guesswork and stress of trying to find a home that you would enjoy living in. What determines whether a property is right for you?

1) How Good Are The Schools?

Homeowners who have children need to make sure that they are going to get a quality education. You should consider the competency of the teachers as well as the ability for your child to get involved in extracurricular activities. Another item to consider is that homes in good school districts generally go for more.

2) Is It Located Near The Highway?

Ease of transportation should be considered when you are thinking about buying a home. If you have to drive 20 minutes to get to the store or an ice skating rink, is that going to be something that you can see yourself doing for the next several years?

3) Is It Located Near Relevant Points Of Interest?

The price that you pay for a home goes up substantially if you are located near an art theater, a stadium or other points of interest in town. Another aspect to consider is whether or not your house backs up to a golf course. Expect to pay a premium for the right to be near a golf course or other recreational facilities.

4) How Much Room Does Your Home's Value Have To Grow?

If you were to upgrade the house, how high of a return would you get on your investment? To determine that, you need to look at comparable houses in the area to determine how far below market value the house currently is. A home that is worth $100,000 next to homes valued at $150,000 have more room to grow than a house valued at $100,000 next to homes valued at $105,000.

5) Has The House Been Properly Maintained?

A pest control company should be hired to look for signs of bugs, termites or other rodent infestations. If there are signs of critters lurking through your house, it may be a good idea to look at another property.

You deserve to live in a home that you feel safe and comfortable in. By following these rules, you can find a property that fits your needs while doubling as a solid financial investment.
